The Drugstore Gallery presents
After the Flood
recent paintings by Georgianne Fastaia

March 17th through April 19th 2006

Art Opening Reception
Friday March 24, 2006 6:30-9:30pm

After the Flood, a series of haunting
“floodscapes” and solitary figures
caught in the water was painted in
response to Hurricane Katrina.
Georgianne is distilling the figure
and abstracting the landscape to
create subtle, layered paintings
which describe the desolate calm
after the storm.
To express the sense of rediscovery
That often follows tragedy, these
paintings are intentionally imperfect,
reconstructed as objects of beauty
despite the flaws--a nail in the wood,
hair caught in the paint. After the Flood
seeks to convey the weight of loss
while offering an undeniably beautiful
world reflected in the waters and
gray-violet skies.

5% of proceeds donated to the American Red Cross
in its continuing efforts to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.
5% off all items for sale during the Opening Reception
featuring New Orleans inspired refreshments & a
musical celebration of River Songs.

Bay Times Review of badfishstudios @ 2006 Sugar Valley

Down In The Valley Of Castro Street Fair

By Sister Dana Van Iquity

Published: October 5, 2006

Georgianne Fastaia of Badfish Studios had a series of extremely moving pieces entitled “Remains to be Seen: Ruined Paintings from New Orleans After the Flood.” The pieces looked as if they had sustained water damage. “My work is about transforming the ‘mistake,’” said Fastaia. “In the process I reuse old paintings, actively damaging the surface to give back history, with my goal to reflect my acceptance of a less perfect yet more whole concept of beauty.” For more about this, browse badfishstudios.com.

review by Alan Bamberger www.artbusiness.com of Group exhibition @ I SPY Gallery March 2007

I Spy Vintage Decor and More (formerly The Drugstore Gallery), 1845 Market St., San Francisco, CA 94103 (formerly National Product); 415.282.0544: Grand Opening - Operation 007, A Glimpse into Our Future.

Artists: Cat Levy, David Benzler, David Newman, Felix Macnee, Genevieve Perkins, Georgianne Fastaia, Heather Robinson, Ivy Jacobsen, James Gleeson, Kevin Pincus.

Comment: The Drugstore Gallery heads downtown, changes its name to I Spy, and upgrades its appearance. The main part of the store is devoted to vintage furniture, collectibles, and decorative arts; a dimunitive gallery occupies a space way to the back. The premise for tonight's event is a show of one painting by each artist who will be soloing at I Spy in 2007. Congratulations and best wishes for success at the new venue! I like it.

Review by Alan Bamberger www.artbusiness.com, AFTER THE FLOOD @ The Drugstore Gallery

The Drugstore Gallery, 3149 Mission St., San Francisco, 94110; 415.282.0554: After the Flood - Paintings by Georgianne Fastaia.

Comment: The paintings are inspired by Hurricane Katrina, Georgianne Fastaia tells me (and also in part by a devastating Connecticut snowstorm of 1972). She's never been to New Orleans, but rather is taken with the idea of floods, their impact, their devastation, what it means to be hopelessly engulfed by water, and even the beauty of natural disaster. She advances her argument not only with her compositions, but also by painting them on abandoned canvases, then framing them with sections of old floorboards, thereby incorporating the idea of rebuilding after a deluge. Priced $225-$1800. Good show, thoughtfully presented and persuasive.
